There are two important things to keep in mind when
considering Spam filtering software.
1. The most important is of course, "Is it compatible
with your email program?". If you use a POP3 email
program like Outlook or Eudora most if not all Spam filtering
software is compatible. If however you use Hotmail (a web based
email) or other free email like Yahoo you need to check if they
don't already offer some type of Spam filtering software or be
extra careful when purchasing a program to make sure it is
compatible first.
2. Once you have assured compatibility you need to realize
Spam filtering software generally works in one of two ways.
a) Rule based: Using an algorithmic set of complex
rules and filters email is scanned and filtered based on
content and other aspects.
b) Permission based: You set permissions on who is
allowed to contact you while anyone else has to go through a
"registration" process. An unapproved person
contacting you for the first time usually has to confirm they
are legit through a double opt-in method like clicking on an
email link.
For businesses we strongly recommend rule based programs,
imagine setting a hurdle customers have to surmount before they
can contact you? Rule based Spam filtering software aren't as
100% as permission based but at least it is seamless to your
clients.
For personal use it is a matter of choice although I still
lean towards rule based filters as forcing people to register to
be able to contact me seems to be frustrating.
